On Sept. 18, 2011 I will be participating in the 12th annual Allies for Autism Foundation walk and run. This fundraiser benefits local Calgary agencies that provide treatment to individuals and families who have a member on the autism spectrum.

My son Jacob is living with Autism.

Autism is a complex life long development disability that typically appears during the first three years of life, currently affecting 1 in 56 individuals This means that over 50,000 Canadians and 1.5 million Americans are believed to have some form of autism. There is no known cure for autism, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. It is clear that children with autism are born with the disorder or born with the potential to develop it. It is not caused by bad parenting. Autism is not a mental ilness. Children with autism are not unruly kids who choose not to behave. Furthermore, no psychological factors in the development of the child have been shown to cause autism. Much work is needed in the treatment and research of autism
